The Egyptian government’s recent decision to implement another round of fuel and electricity subsidy cuts under the IMF’s Extended Fund Facility has generated controversy since it was announced. The immediate consequences of the unpopular decision to cut subsidies on such an integral component of most households’ consumption basket are obvious, but this article aims to do more than just scratch the surface of the issue at hand.
